Unknown element*

In this lab we had to figure out what types of elements that was in 

the jar. I did this by divide the weight of the element by the mole 

number on the piece of paper. Then, we got another number that 

matched an atomic mass of a element. We had to find it and look

 to see if it was the right element.

Popcorn Lab*


             Yesterday Logan, Kendra, and I composed a lab that cooked popcorn. the first thing we did was: add vegetable oil into a 1000-ml beaker to cover the bottom. Then make a tight fitting cover for the beaker from the aluminum foil, then weigh the beaker, oil cover and record the mass which was 200g. Next, we added 30 kernels of popcorn to the beaker and replace the lid. And weigh the beaker with popcorn inside it and recorded the mass which was 204g. Then I poke holes in the foil and placed it on the ring stand to pop. When it finished popping we removed the foil from the top. Then let it cool off and weigh he beaker with the popcorn inside it, and recorded the mass which as 202g.

Kendra, Logan and I did a lab this week and we had to figure out what each sample was. First, we picked a sample and weighed it, after we got the weight we divided it by the number of moles that where in that sample and then we looked at a periodic table and looked at its atomic mass and if it was the same as the number we got dividing then that was the element's name. This lab was fun and it helped me understand a lot more about the periodic table and exactly how to identify elements. :)

Chemical Reaction Lab*

Katrina, Nika, and I did all sorts of different labs and found out how they reacted.
    We took a piece of copper wire shining it up with emery cloth. Then we lit the Bunsen burner and held the copper over it with tongs. the copper turned black then green .
    -Cu+O2 heat CuO
     We put hydrogen peroxide in a test tube. then added manganese dioxide to the test tube. Catching the gasses in a separate test tube we put a burnt splint in the gasses and it made the coals burn hotter.
    -H2O2 MnO2 O2+H2O

    We had hydrochloric acid and we filled a test tube half full. Then we took a short piece of magnesium metal and placed it in the acid. Catching the gas that was produced by the acid and magnesium in another test tube. Then we lit a match and put it in the gas and the flame made a popping noise.
     -2HCL(ag)+Mg-H2+MgCl2

    We placed copper 2 carbonate into a test tube and heated it, then we caught the gasses that were given off. we lit a splint and put it in the gas.
    -CuCo3+heat Co2=CuO

     We had to light a Bunsen burner, then we cut a short piece of magnesium and placed it over the burner holding it with tongs. The magnesium got hott enough and lit up and produced a bright white light.

    We filled a test tube with ammonium carbonate. Then we gently heated this substance and we wafted the smell to us. It smelled like Bleach.

    we mixed Potasium iodine and lead 2 nitrate. and we produced a yellow color.
